Safety is number one
Safeguarding children is at the heart of everything we do at Jabiru – from our governance frameworks to daily interactions between staff and children. Protecting children is everyone’s responsibility.
What do we promise our communities?
connecting them with the right people, places, resources and guidance.
Values and promise
Our values are C-R-E-C-T.
Collaborate:
support each other, to support others.
Respect:
everyone has a good that can be great.
Evolve
there’s always more to learn and do.
Connect:
keep going beyond the organisation to create and build community.
Trust:
be the ones they know they can turn to.
Mandatory reporting and raising concerns
If we have a reasonable suspicion a child has been harmed, is at risk of harm, or is experiencing neglect, we are legally required to report this to the relevant authorities. You are supported to raise concerns, knowing they will be heard and acted upon. You can do so by:
Reporting through Jabiru ‘s online contact form;
Escalating the concern with a Senior Leader;
Using our Complaints Process.
Jabiru educators and support staff undergo background checks and hold a current working with-children Blue Card. They are also required to maintain child-to-staff ratios and take part in ongoing professional development. To build children’s empowerment, communication, self-esteem, resilience, social and other life skills, we actively promote protective behaviours, helping children learn to keep themselves safe. We also support school-based protective behaviour programs.

Sun safety
Shade
Maximise shade for outdoor play and minimise outdoor time during peak UV periods.
Hats
Require children and educators to wear broad brimmed or bucket hats when the UV rating indicates it is necessary.
SPF
Provide SPF 50+ broad-spectrum sunscreen to be used regularly.
Clothing
Encourage sun-safe clothing (children not dressed appropriately will be kept in shaded areas when UV protection is required).

Managing emergencies and trauma.
We have staff trained in first aid, CPR, asthma and anaphylaxis management, with detailed emergency management procedures to help them respond quickly and calmly. Children are provided with immediate care, while emergency services and families are contacted without delay. If your child needs to be transported to a medical facility, a staff member will accompany them. We also understand that children may experience trauma due to events inside or outside of the service. Our educators respond with sensitivity, offering comfort, stability and recovery support when appropriate.
Health, safety and medicines
Tell us if your child has a diagnosed medical condition.
Before a child can attend a service, parents/guardians are required to provide a current Medical Management Plan for asthma, anaphylaxis, allergies and diabetes, signed by your child’s treating doctor. In partnership with your service, you will also need to develop risk minimisation and communication plans. Your child may not be able to attend until these are in place. If your child develops a medical condition after enrolment, notify the Service Manager as soon as possible. Information about your child’s condition will be shared only with staff directly involved in caring for your child.
Controlling disease & keeping things clean.
It’s important to alert your service immediately if your child has been diagnosed with an infectious illness, so we can inform families (while protecting individual privacy) and notify Queensland Health or other authorities if required. When children are unwell they must not attend. If they become unwell while in care, families will be contacted and asked to collect their child promptly. Strict hygiene and infection control practices are followed daily, in line with national regulations and Queensland Health guidelines. We are committed to:
- Maintaining high standards of handwashing, cleaning and sanitising, especially around meals, after toileting and outdoor play.
- Regularly sanitising toys, equipment and frequently touched surfaces.
- Ensuring food safety and handling complies with Food Safety Standards.
- Modelling good personal hygiene practices with children, to build life-long healthy habits.
Your child's medication.
Parents/guardians are responsible for ensuring that: Medication is supplied in the original container with a pharmacist label showing your child’s full name, dosage, frequency of administration, date of dispensing, expiry date and storage instructions
An Authority to Administer Medication Form is completed and signed and handed directly to the nominated supervisor in charge.
Fires, evacuations and lockdowns.
Fire drills, practice lockdowns and evacuation procedures are practiced regularly with children and staff. Educators guide children gently and reassure them throughout. We provide updates about scheduled drills, so you know when these have taken place.
The key to safety is staying connected.
Together, by communicating accurately and openly, we can ensure that children are cared for with compassion and professionalism if they experience an incident, injury, illness or trauma while attending a Jabiru service.
